Abruzzo fascinates a lot. Here, on the border between the central and southern Italy, nature is wild and beautiful. Already in 1923 a large part of the Abruzzo became National Park. Today, Parco d'Abruzzo is 44 000 hectares, 33 000 hectares of which are located within the region's borders. The rich flora includes about 1700 plant species. The fauna instead takes the lead with the famous “wolf of Abruzzo”, but there are many different animals and more than three hundred species of birds.
In the Abruzzi Apennines the highest mountain is the Gran Sasso massif , often called the Southern Alps. Its top is called Corno Grande with its 2912 m and it is part of the Apennines glacier that hosts many destinations for the snow lovers as Campo Imperatore, a very popular ski resort. The Maiella, instead, is the second largest mountain in Abruzzo. Maiella rock walls are a bit less stringent than the slopes of Gran Sasso, if you think that 2700 m are too low.
Mountainous area consists largely of flat highlands (above 2000 m altitude). Here is a unique system in Italy, where both brown bears, wolves and eagles are still present. Maiella is a fascinating place where tranquility of nature attracts people of all ages. Today there are a number of retreats in the area, that will let you push aways the stressuful life you used to and finally find some quiet and peace for a couple of weeks.
The variation of the landscape makes it possible to combine outdoor experiences with lazy days on the beach. The southern part of the Abruzzo coast is called "Riviera dei Pini" and its surrounded by a wide, sandy beach with pine trees where you can visit the picturesque seaside resorts in Silvi Marina, Montesilvano and Pineto.
