Hands down Molise is today the most mysterious region in Italy, and the pleasure of its discovery is charming. Only 50 years ago Molise got his autonomy from Abruzzo, another Italian Region that historically represented one whole entity with Molise.
A larger part of the Region is mountainous and at the borders with Campania (a Southern Italian Region) we have the Matese area that with Monte Miletto reaches the impressive height of 2050 m. The close Passo di Vinchiaturo is a nice experience for a little day trip. The location is full of historical little villages, ravines and rivers.
Among the pearls of Matese area there are the picturesque Campochiaro, Boiano and Campitello, and the interesting archaeological site of Sepino. Sepino is a Roman city that reminds a little of Pompeii with its Roman square (in ancient Latin “forum”) and the amphitheatre.
Of course, Molise is not only made by mountains. In fact, the Adriatic Sea washes its coasts highlighting among all the fine beach resorts, Termoli where you can enjoy the fine sand, the local summer life and a castle with its incredible stories from the XIII century.
The small town of Ururi has a very interesting history as well. It was founded by Albanian refugees in the XVI century and still nowadays the village shows the Albanian traditions, carrying on its culture, language, etc.
A little tip for you. If you are in Molise in the last week of July, do not miss the international bagpipe festival in Scapoli, where folk musicians from around the world visit the city.
It is an amazing experience that no one should miss if in the area. And of course….it’s lot of fun too!!!
