Alghero – the Sardinian city that plays the role of a thriving Marina

Situated on the northwestern coast of Sardinia in the province of Sassari, just adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero is regarded as one of the main sea resorts on the island of Sardinia.

The USP of the city is that even though it grows in terms of popularity over the past few decades, Alghero has managed to retain its distinctive Catalan spirit that has remained almost untouched by the passage of time.

Today, the city is very much a seamless combination of a typical Sardinian sea resort visited by tourists almost all throughout the year and a city of a thriving marina. This is a unique quality, which helps the city to improve its economic power all throughout the year, even when it is not visited by tourists. It is mainly during the hot summers, when the city is abuzz with tourists.

Alghero today is considered as the most Italianesque holiday resorts of Sardinia, very much unique, with the old medieval era-walled town facing the Mediterranean waters and pregnant with a typical labyrinthic network of slender lanes and by lanes, each of which will take a common tourist back to the bygone era by the virtue of its look and feel and an atmosphere that is still untouched by the change of time. Most of these lanes would not allow entry of any modern vehicles, save for cycles at times.

There are a number of ‘things’ to see in and around Alghero. The most recognized of them are the Palazzo Carcassona and Alghero Cathedral (or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Immacolata di Alghero).

The Madonna del Santo Rosario, the Torre del Portal, and the 16th century Tower dell'Esperò Reial, Palazzo D'Albis, Grotta di Nettunoor the Neptune's Grotto, Porto Conte and the Capo Caccia are the other notable places of tourist attraction in Alghero.

An abandoned mine is located at Argentiera, which is situated to the north of Grotta di Nettuno. The mine is recognized by UNESCO as the most notable industrial archaeology of Sardinia. Towards the northwestern fringe of the Island,Stintino, which is famous for its spectacular silvery beaches, is located.

One of the most fascinating tourist attractions is the submarine Nereo Cave, which is regarded as the biggest and the most amazing underwater cave in Europe. This Mediterranean underwater cave is a paradise for the scuba-divers who come from all over the world to test their diving prowess.

The place is important even from the prehistoric perspective. There are a number of prehistoric sites around the city of Alghero. The most notable among them is the Nuraghe di Palmavera, which is one of the most impeccably preserved neuralgic complexes of the world. There is another site, the older Anghelu Ruju, located near the Alghero airport, which is actually a necropolis with around 40 burials.

The city is home to some of the best hotels, restaurants, bars, street side cafes, all of which offer the best Sardinian cuisines, rich in highly palatable sea foods.

The city can be reached by air, ferry, bus as well as by train. There are three airlines companies that operate flights to Alghero – Air One, Ryanair, and Alitalia – Italy’s national carrier. The local station is located near the city center that has frequent train services from various parts of Italy. Besides, there is direct bus service from Cagliari to Alghero.
