Bari – the city with a historic nucleus

Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Bari is an extremely important port city and the capital of the Puglia region of Italy. It cannot be counted as a major tourist destination in Italy, and only a few spots of tourist interest. Still, the city is important for its strategic location and its proximity to the airport, which hosts budget flights from the UK and other parts of Europe. Bari is immensely romantic, which is worthy of a night stay before the tourists can move ahead for the more lustrous tourist destinations. In one word, it is a small suborn in the tour itinerary.

However, from the economical point of view, the city is second after Naples, and is also famous for its Universities. Some sites of tourist importance in and around Bari include Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Bari Cathedral, Petruzzelli Theatre, Swabian Castle, Pinacoteca Provinciale di Bari, The Russian Church, Teatro Margherita, Teatro Piccinni, Orto Botanico dell'Università di Bari, which is a botanical garden, Santa Chiara, Acquedotto Pugliese (Water museum), San Marco dei Veneziani medieval church, Teresa dei Maschi (or the main Baroque church in the city), Cattedrale di San Sabino, Castello Svevo, Piazza del Ferrarese and Piazza Mercantile, the old port or the Porto Vecchio in the eastern part of the city, Pinacoteca Provinciale, the art gallery of the city, and the archaeological museum.

Bari is also the city of food and drink. Truly, it is a heaven for the gastronomic fraternity. The city has charming restaurants, bars and roadside cafes and eateries that offer the sumptuous local cuisines and wines that will not only tickle the taste buds of a foodie but will also help understand the mood of the city in the most intimate way.

Some of the most famous Bari cuisines include the homemade dough, which is used with baked calzoni that is stuffed with onions, capers olives and anchovies. Other dishes include fried panzerotti that is served with mozzarella, simple focaccia alla barese served with tomatoes, savoury taralli, sgagliozze and friselle, fried polenta and a few others, which make a perfect Bari culinary repertoire.

Olive oil and garlic are used aplenty and so are Vegetable minestrone, broad beans, chick peas, celery, fennel and chickory, which are often served as first courses as well as side dishes.

Meat dishes along with the local Barese ragù include pork and lamb.

The best way to reach Bari is by air or rail, the local airport, Bari Palese is just on the outskirts of the city, with two bus services ferrying passengers between the airport and the Piazza Aldo Moro, just outside the main railway station. When it comes to travelling by train, there are a number of railway lines that terminate at Bari. The city has 3 railway terminuses – all at the Piazza Aldo Moro.
