Maratea is a picturesque hill village that is located high above the sea on the southern Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, in the Basilicata region. The city and its surroundings are an astounding destination with an impressive, and abrupt wooded slopes, with dazzling glimpses of the turquoise sea waters through a sharp pass, and towering bare-ridged mountains that stretch inland. The area that encircles the town includes an array of little but picturesque beaches, a marina and a hill that is crowned by a colossal statue of Jesus Christ, an iconic masterpiece of the place. The city is a unique town on the Tyrrhenian coastline pregnant with beautiful landscapes and a coastline, so much so that the place is called "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian".
The entire area is lush green as well as dramatic, with a coastal road (that is even narrower than the iniquitous Amalfi Coast road!) which dips and then winds past the steep cliffs and a series of pocket-size beaches that dot the gleaming Golfo di Policastro.
The place is packed with 44 churches. Some of the most important among them are the Basilica of Saint Blaise, Churches of Santa Maria Maggiore, Saint Vitus, Holy Annunciation, Our Lady of Sorrows, Mary Immaculate, Calvary, Saint Anthony, Saint Anne, Saint Francis of Paola, Rosary, Mary of Lourdes, and quite a few more.
Other places that are worth visiting include the little hamlets that offer absolute serenity and tranquility. The villages of the commune include Acquafredda, Cersuta, Fiumicello-Santavenere, Porto, Marina, Castrocucco, Santa Caterina, Massa, and Bréfaro.
There is also a small museum known as Museo Comunale in Maratea, although the museum does not remain open like other museums regularly throughout the year. It is opened on request that can be lodged through the hotels in advance. There is also a desolate looking island called Isola, which is close to the coast, close to Maratea.
The most famous annual event that takes place in Maratea is the celebrations for San Biagio. The celebration is held during the May every year. Also, another set of summer programs takes place during the month of May, which include jazz concerts and tasting sessions of local cuisines.
When it comes to visiting Maratea, there is a rail line that touches the city en route from Naples to Reggio di Calabria. The railway station, which is located on a rare level ground with the tracks emerging from the darkness of a tunnel.
Apart from the rail link, there is a local bus service that connects the city with Fiumicello, Maratea Porto as well as Castrocucco.
The central bus stop of Maratea is located on the curve of Piazza Vitolo, where the timings of the service are printed at the stop. There are two other bus routes, with one of them reaching Acquafredda. However, buses on these routes run occasionally and are rarely available at the hour of need.
