Located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, Potenza is an ancient city and is one of the most important city from the religious point of view. The city is also one of the highest regional capitals of Italy, which overlooks the valley of the River Basento, located in the Apennine Mountains in Lucania, which is located east of the city of Salerno. It is also the capital of the Basilicata and the Potenza. The city is bordered by the commune of Anzi, Brindisi Montagna, Avigliano, Picerno, Pietragalla, Ruoti, Tito, Pignola, and Vaglio Basilicata.
The city and its outskirts are home to some of the most breathtaking tourist spots and spots of immense historical importance. Some of the most important places of historical importance are the Duomo of San Gerardo, Church of San Francesco, Torre Guevara, Palazzo Loffredo, Ancient City Gates, Church of San Michele, ancient Roman Ruins of an old villa, three gates of the old city walls, which are now demolished. The gates are the Porta S.Giovanni, the Porta S. Luca and the Porta S. Gerardo, the Church of Santa Maria del Sepolcro.
There are formidable restaurants in and around Potenza. These restaurants come up with fairly simple yet sumptuous cuisines and dishes and are quite rustic. Most of these restaurants serve typical Italian cuisines along with the regional specialties. However, there are quite a few restaurants that are generous enough to serve continental and international cuisines for the foreign tourists who are not that comfortable with the local dishes. As in the other Italian cities, there is an abundance of pizzerias that serve various types of freshly prepared delicious pizzas that will leave a foodie practically drooling at any time of a day. When it comes to shopping, Potenza is one of those places that make a shopper’s paradise. The old part of Potenza come up with an array of shops that are small, but come up with a wide range of handicrafts and local merchandise. The entire city has innumerable shops that offer the local traditional pottery works and vases that are eloquently beautiful and are perfect show pieces for interior décor. Then there are quite a few shops that come up with woolen and silk garments and clothes and other stuffs.
Getting to Potenza is not that hassle free as it is in case of other Italian cities and towns. This is because the city is located at a high altitude and hence, has a limited mode of transportation. There is a rail station at Potenza, but is served by only a few trains daily from the nearly towns and cities. Hence, the best way is to get to the city by road by car, which is an extremely enjoyable ride, owning to the scenic beauty of the region with the mountains and valleys and the road that traverses through them.
