Getting to know Udine - a city that will mesmerize you

Situated right in the midst of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia area, between the mighty Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Udine is a northeastern Italian city and a commune, not even 40 kms from Slovenia.

The city, being one of the oldest and dating back to the era of Attila the Hun, is home to some of the most remarkable historical monuments, and naturally is one of the most attractive tourist destinations of Italy today.

The skyline of the city center is famous for the Udine Castle, which was built by the Venetians. The city also has an age old university, University of Udine, and a major theatre called Teatro Giovanni da Udine.

The city hosts a number of important festivals almost all throughout the year. The most famous among them is the Udine Wine and Food Festival, called Friuli D.O.C., which is held during the month of September. Other major festivals that are held in Udine include the Festival of East Asian Cinema, which is known as Far East Film Festival. This festival is held during the month of April.

The city is also one of the most important commercial hubs, with the city housing some quite a number of important commercial centers. It is also one of the main centers of the mechanical and the iron industry.

The city has a very rich and old sporting heritage, with soccer being the most favorite sport. Udine houses one of the oldest and the most famous football clubs of Europe, Udinese Calcio, which regularly participates in the Italian Serie A Football League. It also owns the main football stadium, Stadio Friuli, which also hosted the Group E matches of 1990 FIFA Football World Cup.
