Crotone and neighboring Ionian coasts

The tiny spot on Italian map

Crotone is one of the cities as well as a commune in the Calabria region. The Province of Crotone is a comparatively young city bordering the southwest part Calabria. Eastwards, the Province of Crotone overlooks the Ionian Sea.

The most famous aspect of the city is the color of the Ionian Sea that it overlooks. The color of the water changes and that is the uniqueness of the place. It fades out from light blue to an emerald green, thereby embellishing the coast in an out of this world way, so much so that it is regarded as a protected place from the year 1991. The sea area comprises of Capo Rizzuto, which is the most extensive sea area in entire Italy, with a total sea area of 15,000 hectares.

There are eight promontories, which limit this protected area. The first of them is Capocolonna. It represents a unique archaeological deposit, along with an evidence of the magnificent grandeur of the Magna Grecia. The place is also famous for the only remaining Doric column of the famous temple, which was dedicated to Goddess Hera Lacinia.

A walk along the protected area will get a tourist to Punta Le Castella, which is the last fortification of the famous marine reserve, helped by the famous Byzantine fortress that is located on a tiny island. The island is the birthplace of Ugurk-Ali, the famous commander of the imperial fleet of Constantinople.

The Provincial territory is home to a wide variety of places with geological as well as naturalistic interest. They include the Montagnella Park that is home to the Giglietto Valley as well as the summit of the Pizzuta Mountain. The other memorable place of tourist interest is the Sila National Park. The National Park is home to some dense forests and woods, which are an inestimable natural heritage for the entire community as well as for entire Italy.

The main places of tourist interest include the Cathedral, with its 12th Century baptismal font and the Madonna di Capo Colonna. The other place of tourist interest is the 16th Century Castle of Charles V, which was built on an island, which is connected with the mainland by a narrow land strip, which is called Le Castella.

The place is connected by Crotone Sant'Anna Airport, which is served by a number of chartered flights. There is also a railway station, though a majority of the tourists prefer the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway as well as the 106 Ionica National Road that join Jonic on the eastern coast from Taranto to Reggio Calabria.
