Located in the Tuscany region of northern Italy, and south of Florence, Siena is a medieval city, which is famous for its medieval museums, and its history of art and culture and its indomitable cuisines, making it a city of star attraction for the gastronomic fraternity.
The city is located at the heart of the Toscana region right in the middle of a huge undulating, hilly landscape between the valley of the Arbia River to the south and the valley of the Merse River in the south west, valley of the Elsa River to the north and the Chianti Hills to the northeast, Montagnola Senese to the west, and the Crete Senesi in the Southeast.
The main tourist attractions of the city include Siena Cathedral or the Duomo, Siena Cathedral Pulpit, the timeless classic sculptures and middle aged frescos designed by the likes of Pinturicchio, Donatello, Jacopo della Quercia, Ghirlandaio, Dietisalvi di Speme, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and other geniuses. The other places of tourist attractions are the Piazza del Campo, with its iconic shell-shaped town square, which dominates the city skylines, right next to the Palazzo Pubblico, with its towering Torre del Mangia, which has become one of the most famous landscapes of the city. Then there is the Palazzo Salimbeni, and a string of middle aged churches like the Basilica dell'Osservanza, San Martino, San Domenico, Santa Maria dei Servi, Santo Spirito, San Francesco.
There is a historic synagogue - Siena synagogue and a string of gardens like Orto Botanico dell'Università di Siena, and a magnificent botanical garden. The city is also famous due to its patrician villas, which include Villa Volte Alte, Villa Chigi, Villa Celsa, and the Castle of Belcaro, Villa Cetinale, and the likes.
Apart from these historic structures and many more, the city takes pride in an age old sporting event, the Palio Di Siena, the traditional medieval horse racing event, which is an annual event that is held in Campo of Siena on 2nd July and 16th August every year. However, the city also has a rich tradition in football, and is an important name in the Italian Serie B league.
Other events include Classical Music Festival that is held at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and in other locations all over the city at the time of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Siena Jazz Music Festival that is organized during the summers, and a number of other art and culture exhibitions festivals and a wide range of other events throughout the year.
Siena is a wonderful place for the gastronomic fraternity. The city takes pride in its lustrous drinks, which include some of the world’s costliest wines that are served in the best bars in Europe that the city is home to. Then there are the famous local and Tuscan cuisines that will leave one practically drooling.
Getting to Siena is very easy and effortless. The city can be accessed by air, bus, car and train. Ampugnano Airport is the main airport of Siena. This airport does not host any scheduled flights, though there is a shuttle service between Piazza Gramsci and the airport. Hence, the best option is to take a flight to Florence or Pisa and then take a train or bus to Siena.
The city can also be accessed by trains as there are regular train services directly from Florence, Chiusi or Grosseto. Bus and car services are there from Florence and other nearby cities and towns.
