Teramo – the house of the Italian vineyards

Situated between Gran Sasso d'Italia massif, the highest Apennines Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the city of Teramo is the capital of Teramo Province and a commune of the Abruzzo region. The city is 93 miles from Capital Rome and lies on the point of convergence of the River Vezzola and River Tordino, along the slopes of a hill where the terrain comes up with the typical Mediterranean climate, thereby making the region rich in olive groves and some illustrious vineyards.

The most attractive historical sites that attract tourists are the Saint Berardo Cathedral, which is unique for its unique Romanesque site, the Sant'Antonio Church, San Getulio Church, San Domenico Church, Madonna delle Grazie sanctuary (or the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie), Palazzo Vescovile (or the Bishops Palace), the remains of an ancient Roman theatre that was built way back in 30 BCE.

Other sites of historical importance include the remains of a Roman Domus that includes an opus tessellatum pavement that dates back to the 1st Century BC, the Torre Bruciata (or the Burnt Tower), the Santa Maria de Praediis Church.

The city is also a cultural center, with a number of exhibitions and festivals held annually. The most notable among them are Maggio Festeggiante, which is an art exhibition that is held in the month of May each year. Another important annual event includes the Teramo Literary Prize and the Interamnia World Cup, which is an international handball tournament. In the month of October, an international photography event on Film show is held each year.

Teramo is also home to a number of educational institutions. The most famous of them include the University of Teramo, with its 5 faculties, 35 Masters and 25 Degree courses, 10 departments and 6 postgraduate schools. The University also has its campus, called the Coste Sant'Agostino, which holds the faculties for Communication Sciences, Political Sciences and Law.

The entire region is home to some of the best and the most cost effective hotels and restaurants, bars, guest houses, which offer the traditional Italian hospitality in the best way and the sumptuous Italian dishes and local cuisines, and some of the best wines in the world. As the place is home to some of the best and the most lustrous vineyards of the world, much due to its weather, which is typical Mediterranean in nature, there is no dearth in wines and other drinks once one gets to Teramo.

Getting to Teramo is quite easy. The city can be reached by plane with the closest airports being at Rome and Pescara. The is also a lot of options when it comes to availing the train service, as the nearest railway station is only 1 km from the downtown Teramo. However, there is no direct train link to Teramo. The trains go from Rome to Guilianova, from where there is direct bus and car service to the city.

Besides Guilianova, the city can also be reached from Rome, thanks to the A24 highway from west, and through the A14 in the north and in the south.
